Dominik Szoboszlai Reveals How Half-Time Pep Talk Sparked Liverpool’s Comeback at Wolves

Dominik Szoboszlai provided insights into the halftime motivational discussions that fueled Liverpool’s remarkable turnaround against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

During the initial 45 minutes of Saturday’s Premier League clash at Molineux, Liverpool found themselves trailing after Hwang Hee-chan’s goal, with the home side displaying greater threat on the field.

However, tactical adjustments made during halftime led to yet another inspiring comeback for Jürgen Klopp’s squad. Cody Gakpo’s close-range strike kickstarted the revival. Five minutes from the final whistle, Andy Robertson orchestrated a slick one-two with Mohamed Salah, securing Liverpool’s lead. The three points were sealed when Harvey Elliott’s shot resulted in a Hugo Bueno own goal.

When asked about the critical factor behind the comeback, Szoboszlai shared with Liverpoolfc.com: “Our refusal to surrender. At halftime, the manager emphasized the need for passion, the effort required in the second half, and the commitment needed for the game. We also altered our formation, and everyone executed their roles to turn the game around.”

This victory against Wolves marked Liverpool’s fourth consecutive top-flight win and their third comeback win from a losing position. Szoboszlai added, “Ideally, we wouldn’t want to be trailing 1-0, but if this is how we win, let’s continue, but ultimately, let’s always aim for victory.”

In the lunchtime kick-off, Szoboszlai was again included in the starting midfield trio alongside Curtis Jones and Alexis Mac Allister. In the second half, he shifted into a deeper role to form a ‘double-six’ with Jones as Klopp adjusted both personnel and tactics. Szoboszlai commented on his role after the interval, saying, “If that’s where I need to play, I’ll play there. I had to focus more on the defensive aspects, but I still contributed offensively, although I couldn’t find the net today. But there’s always the next time!”

Reflecting on his rapid adaptation to Liverpool since joining from RB Leipzig, he added, “I’m just doing my job, and I’m thrilled that it’s gone so smoothly. I’d also like to express my gratitude to my teammates who have been incredibly supportive and to the manager, who has given me ample opportunities to showcase myself in the Premier League and in this team. I simply want to continue in the same vein.”
