Former Liverpool winger Ryan Babel shared his thoughts on the ideal position for Cody Gakpo within the current Liverpool lineup. Gakpo, known for his versatility, has been utilized by manager Jurgen Klopp in various roles since joining the club.
As Liverpool leads the Premier League and advances in both the Europa League and the Carabao Cup, Klopp has strategically rotated players to maintain a competitive edge. Despite occasional criticism for profligacy in front of goal, Liverpool’s attacking department, including Gakpo, has been in impressive form.
In a recent game against Newcastle United, Gakpo, deployed as a forward, showcased his prowess by scoring a brace in Liverpool’s home victory. Klopp has utilized Gakpo in multiple positions, including center-forward, central midfielder, attacking midfielder, and on the flanks as a winger. The Dutchman, in his first year with Liverpool, has made 25 appearances, contributing eight goals and three assists.
Despite his versatility and success, the debate about Gakpo’s best position persists. Speaking to LFC TV (Liverpool Echo), Ryan Babel offered his perspective on the matter, emphasizing Gakpo’s natural inclination as a winger. Babel noted that Gakpo’s experience as a false nine during the World Cup caught Jurgen Klopp’s attention, showcasing the player’s adaptability and potential in different roles.
Babel expressed, “It’s always good to be versatile to give a team that little bit extra in times of need in case of injuries and suspensions. And for him, it just increases his playing time more.”
With Liverpool’s top scorer Mohamed Salah away on international duty for the AFCON competition, Gakpo becomes even more crucial in filling the attacking void. Known for his work ethic and consistent contributions to goals and assists, Gakpo has earned appreciation from the Liverpool fanbase. As Klopp navigates the challenges of competitions and player availability, Gakpo’s versatility provides a valuable asset to the team.
