Michael Edwards, the renowned transfer guru credited with revolutionizing Liverpool’s recruitment strategy, is reportedly engaged in discussions with the club’s American owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), regarding a potential return to Anfield. Sources familiar with the matter have informed ESPN about these developments.

Edwards departed his role as Liverpool’s sporting director in 2022 to explore new opportunities. However, FSG has encountered challenges in finding a suitable replacement for the 44-year-old, with individuals like Julian Ward and Jorg Schmadtke failing to establish long-term tenures in the sporting director position post-Edwards.

According to ESPN’s sources, FSG is eager to see Edwards lead a revamped football setup at Anfield. Richard Hughes, currently serving as technical director at Bournemouth, is purportedly lined up to assume the vacant sporting director role at Liverpool by the end of the season.

While Edwards has expressed disinterest in returning to his previous role in football, preferring instead a more senior executive position, he has reportedly declined offers from other clubs like Chelsea and Manchester United. Instead, he is said to be awaiting the right opportunity.

Initial talks between Liverpool and Edwards earlier this year did not progress significantly. However, sources indicate that the club has renewed its offer, and Edwards is intrigued by the prospect. Nevertheless, he has yet to make a final decision.

As Liverpool prepares for a significant summer amid Jurgen Klopp’s impending departure as manager, FSG views Edwards’ expertise as crucial in making the correct decisions. With several top clubs, including Bayern Munich and Barcelona, also searching for new managers, FSG believes Edwards could play a pivotal role in securing Liverpool’s future success.
