Reportedly, Liverpool’s Michael Edwards has identified three managerial targets in case Xabi Alonso remains in Germany, presenting two distinct scenarios.
Jurgen Klopp’s impending departure from Liverpool has prompted the club to embark on the challenging quest of finding his successor, with former Liverpool star Alonso being considered a top candidate.
Alonso’s remarkable stint at Bayer Leverkusen, potentially breaking Bayern Munich’s Bundesliga dominance while achieving success in the Europa League and German Cup, has drawn attention. Despite links to Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, Leverkusen’s former sporting director Reiner Calmund suggests Alonso could reject Liverpool and Bayern, opting to stay with his current club for up to two more years.
In light of this, Edwards, set to rejoin Liverpool in a senior capacity, is exploring alternative options. The three managers on his radar, as reported by Football Insider, are Julian Nagelsmann, Roberto De Zerbi, and Ruben Amorim.
Nagelsmann, despite not meeting expectations at Bayern, is highly regarded as one of Europe’s finest young coaches, with Liverpool valuing his prowess in developing young talent. His contract with the German FA expires this summer, potentially opening the door for Liverpool if his team falters at the European Championship.
De Zerbi, who has impressed since joining the Premier League at Brighton in 2022, is also on Liverpool’s radar. However, competition from Manchester United looms large. Meanwhile, Amorim, at 39 years old, is gaining traction on Liverpool’s shortlist due to his successful stint at Sporting CP, where he secured a league title, two league cups, and one super cup.
