Liverpool boasted strong representation in Gareth Southgate’s preliminary England squad for Euro 2024, with Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez, Jarell Quansah, and Curtis Jones among the initial 33-man roster. However, the squad was eventually trimmed to 26, and both Quansah and Jones were omitted. Alexander-Arnold and Gomez, however, secured their spots and are preparing for England’s opener.
Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker have recently weighed in on the squad selection, particularly praising Liverpool’s Andy Robertson. While Robertson, a £8 million left-back, captains Scotland, Shearer and Lineker believe he has the qualities to start for England.
According to BBC Sport on X, Lineker praised Robertson, saying, “He’s a brilliant left-back isn’t he?” Shearer agreed, highlighting Robertson’s modern full-back skills: “In the modern day, you have to get up and down, be good on the ball, and put balls into the box, and he ticks all of those boxes.” Lineker added, “He’s a proper all-round full-back in the modern game,” and Shearer concluded, “He would get in the England team without a doubt.” Lineker concurred, noting England’s left-back position issues due to injuries, asserting, “He would definitely [get in], even if everyone was fit.”
The Three Lions begin their Euro 2024 campaign against Serbia, with Denmark and Slovenia also in their group. Germany, the host nation, has already made a strong start, defeating Scotland 5-1 in the opening match. Robertson’s Scotland, captained by the Liverpool left-back, faced a tough challenge, exacerbated by Ryan Porteous’s red card.
Robertson’s Liverpool teammates, Alexander-Arnold and Gomez, are gearing up for their match against Serbia. As for Southgate’s plans for England’s left-back position, a role that has been problematic due to injuries, it remains to be seen how he will address it in the tournament.
