Liverpool’s Position on Kevin De Bruyne as Transfer Rumours Surface

Liverpool have been linked with a surprise move for Manchester City captain Kevin De Bruyne—but such speculation appears to be unfounded.

Despite reports suggesting the Reds had made contact with De Bruyne’s representatives regarding a potential summer transfer, sources close to Liverpool indicate that no formal approach has been made for the Belgian midfielder. De Bruyne, who is set to leave City at the end of the current season when his contract expires, will become a free agent after ten influential years at the Etihad.

The 33-year-old playmaker—who turns 34 in June—is expected to draw significant interest across Europe and beyond, with several clubs reportedly monitoring his situation. While Liverpool’s name has been mentioned among the suitors, the club’s recruitment team is believed to be focusing their efforts elsewhere as they plan to strengthen a squad that secured their 20th top-flight title this season.

De Bruyne has occasionally been linked with a move to Anfield in the past, particularly after footage surfaced of him as a young boy expressing admiration for Liverpool. However, such historical connections are not driving any current interest from the Merseyside club.

One factor influencing Liverpool’s strategy is squad age. With experienced stars like Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah already entering their mid-30s—both recently signing contract extensions—the club is cautious about further increasing the average age of the team.

Aston Villa are reportedly among the Premier League clubs interested in De Bruyne, while there is also known interest from Major League Soccer and Saudi Pro League sides. However, De Bruyne is said to prefer remaining in Europe, with Serie A leaders Napoli emerging as one of the more credible potential destinations.

Meanwhile, Liverpool are expected to be proactive in the upcoming transfer window. Reinforcements are being targeted in several areas, including a new left-back and a central striker. The Reds are also exploring options at right-back, particularly with Trent Alexander-Arnold announcing plans to depart the club in the near future.

Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili is set to arrive as part of the rebuild, and the club continues to evaluate potential additions at centre-back to further bolster defensive depth.
